DARVO

DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) is a manipulation tactic described by psychologist Jennifer Freyd (1997) in the context of betrayal trauma research. It refers to the pattern of response by a perpetrator when confronted with their abusive behavior: first denying the abuse, then attacking the credibility of the accuser, and finally reversing roles by presenting themselves as the true victim.

The sequence is predictable. Deny: 'I never did that,' 'You're exaggerating,' 'That didn't happen.' Attack: 'You're crazy,' 'You always accuse me unfairly,' 'You're the one with the problem.' Reverse Victim and Offender: 'Actually, I'm the victim here,' 'You're hurting me with your accusations,' 'Look how you treat me.'

Freyd proposed that DARVO is particularly effective precisely because it appeals to the natural human tendency to empathize with those expressing pain. When the perpetrator presents as a victim, the neutral observer (and even the real victim themselves) may feel compassion toward the perpetrator and doubt the victim. This makes DARVO an extraordinarily powerful instrument of epistemic control.

Experimental studies (Harsey & Freyd, 2020) have confirmed that exposure to DARVO reduces the perceived credibility of the real victim and increases sympathy toward the perpetrator. Participants who read DARVO responses were significantly less likely to believe the victim than those who read other types of responses.

DARVO operates at multiple scales: intimate relationships, family dynamics, institutional contexts (workplace bullying, abuse in religious organizations), and even at political and social scales. Institutions accused of covering up abuse frequently deploy collective DARVO: denying the facts, attacking victims for coming forward, and presenting themselves as harmed by the accusations.

Recognizing DARVO is fundamental for therapists working with abuse survivors, legal professionals, and society at large. Psychoeducation about this pattern helps victims not fall into the doubt and guilt that DARVO seeks to generate.
